Foreign Decadence

The other night I performed a great service to clubland ;) and helped my friend Bartend the opening night of a large, bottle service oriented club outside of Lecce. My journey has been so heavily focused on Food/Restaurants, that I thought chance to delve into cocktails, music and youth culture would be a welcomed alternative. I will reserve ALL judgment and not discuss the music, the vibe, management, pricing, staffing, decor etc. Instead let’s talk fruit!

In a region RICH with indigenous fruits, I found it fascinating that the fruit platter which accompanied a bottle of Champagne was an overly priced international selection and that this was a symbol for the bar manager of “luxury”. Above you will see Mango, Avocado, Papaya coconut and a selection of berries. These were served alongside Peach, Pear and Pineapple. The local (and incredible) Melon and Figs were noticeably missing. Their fruits were right outside this gated neverland, ready to be picked.

I want a Burrito, badly!

Burritos will still be here when you return - they're not going anywhere... can you cook up burrito-style feast in the meantime?

Its not just ANY Burrito I want sis, its Cailfornia Taqueria in Park Slope BK (my mouth has specific needs). In Rome Im sure I will settle and/or cook a mexican feast. But to be clear there are alot of needed spices not easily found here (certainly Lecce)...cilantro etc.

Well, i guess that's a bit how we feel over here in the US, hearing, seeing, and imagining all of your amazing food, knowing we really can't replicate it cause the veggies, the cheeses, meats, and even the olive oil just won't be the same - but part of the fun and the challenge is in making amazing food, given what you have on hand to work with...
